Coastal planting fails for two reasons: salt burn on the foliage and wind that never stops. The species here handle both, and several are used on front-line dune plantings where nothing else survives.

Coastal Tea Tree, Moonah, Westringia and Banksia integrifolia are the toughest options and will take direct exposure. Behind a first line of shelter you can widen the range considerably to include lilly pilly, olive and Norfolk Island Pine.

Sandy coastal soils drain fast and hold little nutrient. Mulch heavily and water deeply through the first two summers rather than lightly and often.
