Pear Trees
Ornamental Pear Trees Australia — Capital, Chanticleer & Manchurian
Ornamental pear trees are Australia's go-to choice for driveways, avenues and feature planting. Fast-growing, tidy in form, spectacular in spring flower and autumn colour — and unlike fruiting pears, no messy fruit drop to clean up.
Comparing the most popular ornamental pear varieties
| Variety | Mature size | Shape | Best for |
| Capital | 10m x 3m | Narrow upright column | Tight spaces, narrow driveways, fence lines |
| Chanticleer | 11m x 5m | Broad pyramid | Front yards, feature trees, wider spaces |
| Manchurian | 12m x 8m | Wide rounded canopy | Avenue plantings, large feature trees, shade |
| Snow Pear | 7m x 5m | Weeping silver foliage | Cool-climate feature, courtyard interest |
Capital vs Chanticleer: The most common buying decision. Capital is taller and very narrow — perfect for narrow strips, between houses, or where you want height without width. Chanticleer is broader and more impressive as a standalone feature tree — the better choice for front yards and wider driveways.
All ornamental pears are deciduous, drop their leaves in late autumn, and burst back to life in spring with masses of white flowers. They tolerate most Australian climates from cool temperate through to warm temperate — not recommended for tropical zones.
