About Your New Prunus 'Snofozam' - Weeping Cherry
Prunus 'Snofozam' is the weeping cherry sold as Snow Fountains, a deciduous ornamental grafted onto a straight stem so the branches cascade to the ground. In early spring the whole curtain of stems is covered in single white flowers before the leaves appear. The narrow foliage turns yellow to orange in autumn.
Plant it in full sun to light afternoon shade, in well drained soil with organic matter worked through. It suits cool temperate and temperate districts and is fully frost hardy, colouring best where winters are properly cold. Growth is moderate, around 30 to 60 centimetres a year, and water through summer keeps it looking its best.
At 1.8 to 2.4 metres tall and 1.5 to 2.5 metres wide it fits courtyards, small front gardens, entries and large containers where a full sized tree would not. Use it as a single specimen with clear space around the skirt, or in a matched pair. It carries a garden through spring on its own.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Weeping Cherry
What is Prunus 'Snofozam'?
Prunus 'Snofozam', widely sold as the Snow Fountains weeping cherry, is a deciduous ornamental cherry with strongly weeping branches. It is grafted at height onto an upright stem, so the shoots arch out and fall in a curtain to the ground. Masses of single white blossom open in early spring before the leaves.
How big does the weeping cherry grow?
It reaches 1.8 to 2.4 metres in height and 1.5 to 2.5 metres in width, with the final height largely set by the height of the graft. It is a genuinely small tree, which is why it works in courtyards and near entries. Allow room for the skirt of branches to hang freely.
When does it flower?
Blossom appears in early spring, generally through September in most southern Australian gardens, opening on bare wood before the foliage emerges. The white flowers are single and cover the length of every weeping stem. The display lasts around two to three weeks, then leaves follow and the tree carries fine green foliage all summer.
Is it evergreen or deciduous?
It is deciduous. Leaves colour yellow to orange in autumn and drop for winter, leaving the weeping framework of bare branches visible, which has its own sculptural appeal. Losing the canopy in winter also lets sun through to whatever is planted beneath, and it makes the spring blossom that much more of an event.
Does it need sun or shade?
Full sun gives the heaviest flowering and the best autumn colour. Light afternoon shade is acceptable in hot inland gardens and will not do much harm, but deep shade reduces blossom and thins the canopy. Choose an open position with reasonable air movement, which also helps keep foliage healthy through humid weather.
Can it grow in a pot?
Yes, provided the container is large, at least 50 to 60 centimetres across, with a quality free draining potting mix. Its small mature size makes it one of the better ornamental trees for a courtyard pot. Potted plants dry out faster, so water consistently through spring and summer and feed each year in early spring.
How do I prune and care for the weeping cherry?
Prune straight after flowering, taking out any stems that grow upward from the graft and shortening branches that drag along the ground. Remove dead or crossing wood at the same time. Water deeply through dry spells, mulch clear of the trunk, and feed in early spring with a balanced slow release fertiliser.
