PLANT PROFILE
Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Aureomarginatum’, commonly known as the Variegated Tulip Tree, is a striking deciduous tree admired for its distinctive foliage and seasonal flowers. The large, tulip-shaped leaves are bright green with golden-yellow variegated margins, adding colour throughout the growing season. In late spring to early summer, it produces unique tulip-like flowers in shades of green and orange, although these may be less prolific in young trees. Mature specimens typically reach 10–15 metres tall with a spread of 6–8 metres, forming a broad, pyramidal canopy.
This cultivar grows at a moderate rate and thrives in temperate climates with fertile, well-drained soils. It prefers full sun but will tolerate light shade, and requires regular watering during establishment. Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Aureomarginatum’ is deciduous, frost hardy, and low-maintenance once established. Autumn foliage turns golden-yellow, adding further seasonal interest.
They look excellent when planted as feature trees in larger gardens, used in avenues, or incorporated into civic landscapes. Their striking variegated foliage and structural form make them valuable as both ornamental and shade trees.
