PLANT PROFILE

Westringia fruticosa, commonly known as Coastal Rosemary, is a hardy evergreen shrub native to coastal regions of Australia. It forms a dense, rounded habit with grey-green foliage that resembles the leaves of true rosemary, though it is unrelated. In spring and throughout much of the year, it produces small, white to pale lilac, star-shaped flowers held among the foliage, adding subtle seasonal interest. Mature plants typically grow 1.5–2 metres tall and 1.5–2 metres wide, though they can be pruned to maintain smaller sizes.

This species has a moderate to fast growth rate and is highly tolerant of coastal conditions, including salt-laden winds and sandy soils. It performs well in full sun to part shade and is both drought tolerant and frost hardy once established. Westringia fruticosa requires minimal maintenance beyond occasional pruning to maintain shape, making it well suited to both formal hedges and naturalistic plantings.

They look excellent when used as clipped hedges, low screens, or feature shrubs in coastal and native gardens. They are also effective in mixed plantings, along driveways, or mass-planted on banks and slopes where erosion control and hardy coverage are needed.=

Hedging & Screening: Space 1 – 1.2 m apart
Feature Planting: Space 1.5 – 2 m apart

  1. Choose a sunny to partly shaded, free-draining site.
  2. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
  3. Backfill with native-appropriate compost to improve establishment.
  4. Water deeply after planting and mulch to conserve soil moisture.
  5. Prune lightly after establishment to encourage a dense habit.

Use this as a reference when digging your planting hole. We recommend digging at least 10% wider than the dimensions below to encourage strong root development.
