About Heliconia psittacorum × spathocircinata ‘Tropics’

‘Tropics’ is a compact heliconia, a cross of Heliconia psittacorum and Heliconia spathocircinata, forming upright leafy clumps topped with red bracts through the warm months. The narrow paddle-shaped leaves are glossy and held stiffly upright, giving a clean vertical line that reads well in modern tropical planting schemes.

Plant it in full sun for the heaviest flowering, or dappled shade for lusher leaves. It needs rich, free-draining soil, steady summer water and warmth, growing 60 centimetres to 1.5 metres a year in tropical and subtropical zones. Cold is its limit, since frost damages the foliage and growth stalls through cool winters.

Landscapers use it in resort and poolside beds, rainforest garden edges, narrow side gardens and large planters where a bold tropical look is wanted without much height. Massed, it gives near continuous colour through summer. It is a straightforward way to add exotic flowering to a warm climate garden that already has shade and structure.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Tropics Heliconia

    What is Tropics Heliconia?

Tropics Heliconia is an evergreen clumping perennial in the Heliconiaceae family, bred from Heliconia psittacorum and Heliconia spathocircinata. It grows as a dense stand of upright stems with narrow glossy leaves and produces red bracts held clear of the foliage. It is one of the more compact heliconias and one of the easier ones to grow well.

    Is it evergreen or deciduous?

Evergreen. The clump holds its foliage year round in frost-free climates, though individual stems die off naturally after they have flowered and should be removed. In cooler or drier winters the plant can look tired and slow right down, but it does not defoliate the way a true deciduous plant does.

    When does Tropics Heliconia flower?

Flowering peaks in spring and autumn, about September to November and March to May, with additional bracts appearing through summer in humid tropical gardens. Bracts hold their colour for several weeks. Warmth, water and a spring feed drive the display, so plants in cooler or drier positions flower over a shorter window.

Where does it grow best in Australia?

It is at home in tropical and subtropical climates, from far north Queensland and Darwin down through the Queensland coast to northern New South Wales. Frost-free coastal gardens further south will grow it with summer water and winter shelter. Inland and cool temperate districts are too cold for it in open ground.

Does it need sun or shade?

Full sun to partial shade. Open sun produces the most bracts and the sturdiest stems as long as the soil stays moist, while filtered light under a high canopy suits it in hot dry inland heat and stops the leaves bleaching. In heavy shade you get lush foliage and very little flower.

Is it suitable for coastal positions?

It grows well in warm coastal gardens set back from the front line, where it gets humidity and mild winters without direct salt spray. Exposed frontal dune positions will shred and burn the broad leaves. A hedge, fence or established canopy on the seaward side is usually enough shelter to keep it looking good.

How do I look after Tropics Heliconia?

Water deeply and often through spring and summer, and hold a thick layer of mulch over the rhizomes. Apply a complete fertiliser in early spring and again after the first flush. Cut spent stems to the base as they finish, and divide the clump every few years to keep flowering strong and the centre from thinning.
