    About Heliconia rostrata ‘Rauliniana’

Heliconia rostrata ‘Rauliniana’ is a large hanging lobster claw, an evergreen clumping perennial with tall leafy canes and long pendant flower spikes of scarlet bracts edged in yellow and green. The spikes hang below the foliage on arching stems, which is what sets this one apart from the upright heliconias.

It needs full sun to part shade, deep rich soil with good drainage, and generous water and feeding through summer. Growth is fast in tropical and subtropical zones, around 80 centimetres to 2 metres a year. It is frost sensitive and wind sensitive, so give it warmth, shelter and protection from cold snaps.

It works as a feature clump in rainforest gardens, beside pools, in resort landscaping and anywhere the hanging spikes can be seen from below or from a path. The flowers cut well and last indoors. Where a warm climate garden needs one plant to carry the whole tropical effect, this is usually it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Rauliniana Heliconia

    What is Heliconia rostrata ‘Rauliniana’?

It is a selected form of Heliconia rostrata, the hanging lobster claw, grown as an evergreen clumping perennial. Tall banana-like canes carry long pendant spikes of overlapping red bracts tipped with yellow and green. ‘Rauliniana’ is a vigorous, large growing selection with particularly long spikes, and it flowers reliably once the clump is properly established.

How big does Rauliniana Heliconia grow?

Mature clumps usually reach 3 to 4 metres tall and spread 2 to 3 metres wide, and the flower spikes themselves can hang half a metre or more. Annual growth is roughly 80 centimetres to 2 metres, so it makes size quickly in warm conditions. Allow room, because the rhizome keeps spreading outwards each year.

    When does it flower?

Spikes appear mainly in spring and autumn, around September to November and March to May, and warm humid gardens often carry flowers well into summer. Stems generally need to be a season or two old before they flower, so resist cutting the whole clump back at once. Each spike lasts several weeks on the plant.

    Is it frost tolerant?

No. It is frost sensitive and will be damaged by even light frost, so it belongs in frost-free tropical, subtropical and sheltered warm coastal gardens. Cold wind also tatters the leaves. In marginal areas plant it against a warm wall under a canopy, mulch heavily, and cut damaged growth out in spring.

Does it need sun or shade?

Full sun to partial shade suits it. Plants in full sun flower most heavily but need consistent moisture to stop the leaves scorching, while morning sun with afternoon shade is a good compromise in hotter districts. Under dense shade you get tall leafy canes and comparatively few flower spikes for the space it takes.

    Can it grow in pots?

It can, but it needs a large container, at least 60 to 80 centimetres across, with rich free-draining mix and frequent watering and feeding. Potted plants stay smaller and flower less freely than those in open ground. Divide and repot every two to three years, since a tightly root bound clump will stop producing spikes.

How do I care for Rauliniana Heliconia?

Water deeply through the warm months, mulch thickly, and feed in early spring and midsummer with a complete fertiliser or aged manure. Cut each cane to the ground after it has flowered, leaving the younger canes to carry the next display. Thin crowded clumps every few years and clear damaged foliage after cold or windy weather.

Mulching: Apply a 5 to 7 centimetre layer of organic mulch over the root zone, keeping it 5 centimetres clear of the trunk.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light tip prune in late winter to maintain shape if used as hedging or screening. For a clear trunk feature, remove lower branches as the tree grows.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring and again in autumn for steady growth and consistent foliage colour.
