Eucalyptus gregsoniana - Wolgan Snow Gum

About Your New Eucalyptus gregsoniana - Wolgan Snow Gum

Eucalyptus gregsoniana gives you the striking smooth white and grey bark of a snow gum on a tree small enough for an ordinary garden. The Wolgan Snow Gum is a naturally compact mallee form, and it thrives in frosty highland conditions where most other eucalypts struggle.

Eucalyptus gregsoniana grows to 5 to 10 metres tall and 3 to 6 metres wide at 30 to 60 centimetres per year, often forming multiple stems from the base that show the patchy white bark to full effect. White flowers appear through spring and summer and attract bees and honeyeaters.

This Australian native is frost hardy, surviving heavy and frequent frost without damage, and is one of the best eucalypts for alpine and tablelands districts. It grows in full sun and tolerates poor rocky soils and exposure once established.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Eucalyptus gregsoniana

How big does Eucalyptus gregsoniana grow?

The Wolgan Snow Gum reaches 5 to 10 metres tall and 3 to 6 metres wide. It is a compact mallee form and one of the smallest snow gums available.

What is a mallee form?

A mallee grows multiple stems from a woody underground lignotuber rather than a single trunk. This gives a lower, broader shape and lets the plant regenerate after fire or damage.

Is Eucalyptus gregsoniana frost hardy?

Yes. It is frost hardy and survives heavy and frequent frost without damage. It is one of the best eucalypts for alpine and cold tablelands districts.

What does the bark look like?

Bark is smooth and sheds in patches of white, cream and grey, giving the characteristic snow gum appearance. Multiple stems show it off particularly well.

Is it suitable for a suburban garden?

Yes. At 5 to 10 metres it is one of the few eucalypts genuinely scaled for a suburban block, particularly where its bark can be seen up close.

How fast does it grow?

It grows at a moderate 30 to 60 centimetres per year, which is slow for a eucalypt and part of why it stays manageable in a garden setting.

How far apart should I plant it?

Plant 4 to 6 metres apart as individual feature trees so the multi-stemmed form and bark can develop and be seen properly.
