PLANT PROFILE

Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, or Bangalow Palm, is a tall, fast-growing Australian native palm known for its graceful, feather-like fronds, smooth green trunk, and seasonal cream-pink flowers. Commonly used in tropical and native-style landscapes, it adds instant height, texture, and softness to both residential and commercial projects.

Typically reaching 8–20 metres high and 3–5 metres wide, this evergreen palm forms a clean, upright structure that fits neatly into narrow spaces or multi-storey planting schemes. It thrives in full sun to part shade, tolerates light frost once established, and performs well in humid or coastal environments.

They look excellent when planted in groups along driveways, used in tropical courtyard designs, or positioned around pools for vertical interest and lush canopy coverage. Low maintenance and self-cleaning, Bangalow Palm is a popular choice for structured tropical gardens and native screening.

  1. Choose a sheltered position in full sun to part shade, protected from strong winds and frost during early establishment.
  2. Ensure the soil is free-draining, especially in clay-heavy sites. Improve with organic matter or plant on a raised mound if necessary.
  3. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball to encourage outward root growth.
  4. Position the plant at the same depth it was in the pot, backfill with native soil, and water in thoroughly to remove air pockets.
  5. Apply mulch around the base to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature — keep mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot.

Use this as a reference when digging your planting hole. We recommend digging at least 10% wider than the dimensions below to encourage strong root development.

Here Is What Customers Like You Frequently Ask

FAQ

Q: Is the Bangalow Palm suitable for coastal planting?

A: Yes, this species handles salt-laden winds and sandy soils very well, making it a great choice for tropical or coastal gardens.

Q: Can it grow in cooler climates like Victoria or inland NSW?

A: It can grow in cooler climates if protected from frost in its early years. Once established, it will tolerate light frost and performs well in sheltered microclimates.

Q: Does the Bangalow Palm need a lot of pruning?

A: No. It is considered self-cleaning, meaning it naturally drops its old fronds. Occasional removal of spent fronds may be done for tidiness, but regular pruning is not required.

Q: How fast does it grow and how tall will it get?

A: It grows moderately, around 30–60 cm per year, eventually reaching a mature height of 8–20 metres depending on conditions and location.
