Olea europaea 'Arbequina' is a compact Spanish olive cultivar grown for both fruit and form. Fine grey-green leaves with silver undersides sit on a naturally rounded, well-branched crown, and the trunk gnarls attractively with age. Small cream flowers in spring are followed by small dark olives in autumn.
It reaches about 4 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 4 metres wide if left unpruned, and is easily held lower. Full sun and free draining soil are the requirements, and it accepts alkaline and rocky ground that defeats other trees. Established plants are drought tolerant and take moderate frost. Growth is about 30 to 50 centimetres a year.
It suits driveway borders, avenue planting, windbreaks, screening and rural property planting, and it holds a clipped shape well enough for formal work. It is smaller and more compact than most olives, with fine grey-green foliage and a rounded habit. It is evergreen, self-fertile, and productive from a young age, which makes it useful for both landscape and orchard planting.
Left to itself it reaches roughly 4 to 6 metres tall and 3 to 4 metres wide, which is compact for an olive. Regular pruning holds it at 2 to 3 metres without difficulty, and it can be clipped tighter again for hedging. Advanced and aged specimens are already at or near their working size when planted.
Yes. It sets small dark olives that ripen in autumn, usually from April onward in Australia. They are high in oil and prized for pressing, and they can also be cured for the table after the usual brining or water treatment. Fruit set begins early, often within two or three years of planting.
