About Tipuana tipu – Pride of Bolivia / Rosewood Tree
Tipuana tipu, commonly known as the Pride of Bolivia or Rosewood Tree, is a fast-growing deciduous tree admired for its graceful form and vibrant yellow spring and summer flowers. It develops a broad, spreading canopy of light green, fern-like foliage, offering excellent shade and a soft, feathery texture. Mature trees typically reach 10–15 metres tall with a spread of 10–12 metres, creating a strong focal point in large gardens or streetscapes.
This species is hardy and performs well in warm to temperate climates. Tipuana tipu thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, including poor or dry conditions, provided they are well drained. It is drought tolerant once established and withstands light frost. Its deciduous habit allows sunlight through in winter while providing dense shade in summer. Minimal maintenance is required beyond formative pruning to shape and control size.
They look excellent when used as feature or shade trees in large gardens, as street trees, or in civic landscapes where bold foliage and seasonal flower colour add visual appeal. Its graceful habit and resilience make it ideal for parks and avenues.
