PLANT PROFILE
Stenocarpus sinuatus, commonly known as the Firewheel Tree, is an ornamental Australian native admired for its striking flowers and attractive foliage. The glossy, dark green leaves are broad and often deeply lobed, giving the tree a tropical character. From late summer into autumn, it produces spectacular circular clusters of bright red to orange flowers, resembling a wheel, that stand out vividly against the foliage. Mature trees typically grow 8–12 metres tall with a spread of 4–6 metres, forming a rounded, upright canopy.
This species has a moderate growth rate and performs best in warm, frost-free to light-frost regions. It is evergreen and grows well in deep, fertile, well-drained soils. Stenocarpus sinuatus thrives in full sun but will tolerate part shade, particularly when young. It is low-maintenance once established, with occasional pruning helping to maintain structure. The flowers are nectar-rich and attract birds and pollinators, adding ecological value to plantings.
They look excellent when planted as feature trees in large gardens, used in parks or civic landscapes, or positioned as avenue trees where their seasonal flower display can be appreciated. Their bold foliage and floral display also make them effective in tropical and subtropical landscape designs.
