Not sure how many trees you need?

Plan your hedge

Enter the length of your boundary, then choose how closely you want to plant.

Choose your planting spacing

Enter your boundary length to see how many trees you need.

Measure only the boundary you intend to plant—exclude gates and gaps. Spacing is centre to centre. Quantities are rounded up for one row, allowing roughly half the spacing at each end. Site conditions and pruning affect the final hedge.

    About Murraya paniculata Topiary Forms

Murraya paniculata in trained form. These are not hedge plants. Each one has been clipped and grown on to a finished shape, so the structure is already there the day it arrives.

The Standard Form is a clipped head carried on a clear straight stem. It frames an entry, marks a gate, or repeats down a driveway, and you can plant underneath it.

The Ball Forms are specimens clipped to a dense sphere and sitting low. They suit pots, bed corners and entry pairs where you want structure without height.

All trained forms carry the same glossy dark green foliage and the same fragrant white flowers as the hedge form, though flowering is lighter on a heavily clipped plant. They hold their shape with a light trim two or three times through the warmer months. Murraya performs best in warm temperate to subtropical climates and frost free parts of southern Australia, in full sun to part shade with well drained soil.

These cost more than the shrub sizes because the training and the growing on time are already done.

Looking for hedging stock? See Murraya paniculata Orange Jasmine for the natural bushy form, supplied as a shrub from 200mm tubestock up to advanced 200L specimens, for hedges and screens you clip yourself.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Murraya paniculata Topiary Forms

What is the difference between the Standard Form and the Ball Form?

Height is the difference. The Standard Form is a clipped head on a clear straight stem, so the foliage sits at eye level and the ground underneath stays plantable. The Ball Form is a sphere sitting low, used for pots, bed corners and entry pairs. Both arrive already trained.

How much pruning do they need?

A light trim two or three times through the warmer months holds the shape. Cut back to just inside the finished outline each time rather than letting growth run and then cutting hard, which opens the surface up.

    Do they still flower?

Yes, in flushes through the warmer months, with the same orange blossom scent as the hedge form. Flowering is lighter than on an unclipped plant because each trim takes off some of the wood that would have carried flower.

    Can they go in pots?

They were made for pots. Both forms hold a clipped shape above a pot rim, which is why they get specified in pairs at entries and repeated along terraces. Keep water up in summer, since a clipped plant in a pot dries out faster than one in the ground.

Where does Murraya grow best in Australia?

Warm temperate to subtropical regions including NSW, QLD, and frost free parts of VIC, SA and WA. It is sensitive to heavy frost and is best avoided in cold inland areas.
