Loropetalum chinense 'Burgundy' is an evergreen shrub from the witch hazel family, grown for foliage that holds a deep burgundy to plum colour all year. It forms a dense, rounded bush with layered horizontal branching. In spring the plant carries clusters of fine, ribbon like pink flowers that sit brightly against the dark leaves.
It colours best in full sun and will take partial shade, though the foliage turns greener in deep shade. Give it well drained soil, slightly acidic if you have the choice, and water regularly for the first two summers. It grows 30 to 60 centimetres a year, tolerates light to moderate frost once established and needs little upkeep.
Use it for low hedging, driveway borders, mass planting on banks and as a colour block against green foliage or rendered walls. It also holds its shape in large pots beside an entry or along a terrace. For gardens that need year round contrast without constant clipping, it earns its place.
