Eucalyptus scoparia, the Wallangarra White Gum, is one of the best-behaved gums for a suburban block. The trunk is smooth and powdery white, shedding through the year to keep the colour clean, and it carries a broad open crown of narrow glossy leaves that hang with a slight weep.
It reaches around 8 to 12 metres tall and 5 to 10 metres wide, which is modest for a eucalypt. That size, plus the light dappled shade it throws rather than dense cover, is why it turns up so often in streetscapes, avenues and medium to large gardens where a bigger gum would be too much.
Small white flowers appear through spring and summer, followed by little oval gum nuts. The flowers bring nectar-feeding birds and insects, and the canopy gives shelter, so it earns its place as a habitat tree as well as a feature.
It comes from poor gravelly country on the Queensland and New South Wales border and is tougher than the white trunk suggests. It handles heat, dry conditions, compacted urban soil and most soil types, provided drainage is reasonable.
