Swamp mallet is a Western Australian eucalypt with smooth coppery bronze to dark grey bark that sheds annually to a satin finish, and narrow bright green leaves in a dense rounded crown. Small white flowers open from late winter into spring. It is evergreen, fast growing and very tough in dry, exposed country.
Mature trees sit at 6 to 10 metres tall with a spread of 4 to 6 metres, forming an upright, compact head on a single slender trunk. That scale suits street verges, car parks and suburban blocks where a full sized gum would be too much. The canopy stays tidy without shaping.
It performs best in southern Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and the drier parts of New South Wales, particularly on sandy or gravelly ground with low to moderate rainfall. It also handles saline and exposed coastal sites. Humid subtropical conditions with heavy summer rain suit it least of all.
Once established it is both. It comes from low rainfall country in the Western Australian wheatbelt and is used there for windbreaks and salinity control, so it copes with dry summers, salty soils and salt laden wind. First year watering still matters; after that, supplementary irrigation is rarely needed.
From late winter into spring, roughly August to October, with small creamy white flowers clustered through the canopy. They are nectar rich and bring in honeyeaters and native bees. Flowering is followed by small woody gumnuts that hold on the tree and add a bit of texture through summer.
