About Distylium myricoides × racemosum ‘Vintage Jade’

Distylium myricoides x racemosum 'Vintage Jade' is a dense evergreen shrub with glossy deep green foliage carried on arching horizontal branches. New growth flushes bronze before hardening off. Small maroon-red flowers sit tight against the stems in late winter and early spring, quiet rather than showy, and the plant holds a neat rounded outline year round.

It takes full sun through to part shade and grows in most soils, including heavy clay, provided water moves away. Suited to cool and warm temperate, subtropical and coastal gardens, it handles light to moderate frost once established, along with humidity and urban heat. Growth is steady at 20 to 50 centimetres a year.

Use it for low hedging, mass planting under trees, foundation borders and car park islands where something evergreen has to hold its shape without constant attention. It clips well and recovers quickly from a hard cut. Plant 60 to 80 centimetres apart for a continuous low hedge. For landscapers it is a reliable substitute for box and dwarf azalea.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Vintage Jade Distylium

    What is Vintage Jade Distylium?

Vintage Jade is a hybrid between Distylium myricoides and Distylium racemosum, two evergreen shrubs in the witch hazel family. It grows as a low, wide, densely branched mound of small glossy leaves, with bronze new growth and tiny maroon flowers in late winter. It was bred as a tougher alternative to box and dwarf azalea.

How big does Vintage Jade grow?

Expect roughly 60 to 90 centimetres in height and 1.2 to 1.5 metres in width at maturity. The habit is wider than it is tall, which is exactly what makes it useful for low massed work. Regular light clipping holds it tighter than that, and it can be kept as a hedge around 50 centimetres high.

Does it need sun or shade?

Both work. Full sun gives the densest habit and the best bronze tones on new growth, while part shade suits it under established trees or on the southern side of a building. Very deep shade thins the foliage out and opens up the branching. Four to six hours of direct sun a day is the sweet spot.

    Is it frost tolerant?

Yes, within reason. Established plants handle light to moderate frost without foliage damage, which covers most of temperate and inland Australia. Plants going into their first winter benefit from a good mulch layer and steady soil moisture. Under severe alpine frost the foliage can burn, though the shrub normally pushes clean growth again in spring.

How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?

For a continuous low hedge, plant 60 to 80 centimetres apart, measured centre to centre. For general mass planting where you want the shrubs to knit into a single layer without a formal edge, 80 centimetres to 1 metre is enough. Closer spacing closes the gaps sooner but does not change the final height.

    Can it grow in pots?

Yes. The compact root system and slow steady growth suit large pots and planter boxes, and it keeps its shape without much intervention. Use a quality potting mix with added drainage, a pot at least 40 centimetres across, and water when the top few centimetres dry out. Feed twice a year with a slow-release fertiliser.

How do I prune and care for it?

Clip once the winter flowering finishes, then again in mid summer if you want a crisp edge. It tolerates renovation pruning back into old wood, so an overgrown plant can be reset. Otherwise mulch each spring, apply a slow-release fertiliser at the same time, and water through extended dry spells for the first two years. Pests are rarely an issue.
