PLANT PROFILE

Crataegus laevigata ‘Paul’s Scarlet’, commonly known as Paul’s Scarlet Hawthorn, is a compact, deciduous ornamental tree admired for its dense clusters of rich double pink-red flowers in spring. The vibrant blooms appear in abundance along the branches, creating a stunning floral display before giving way to small red berries that attract birds in autumn. Its glossy, dark green, lobed leaves turn soft yellow before falling, and its rounded canopy provides shade and structure year-round. Mature trees typically reach 4–6 metres tall and 4 metres wide, making it ideal for gardens, avenues, or small landscapes.

This hardy European tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, tolerating a wide range of conditions including clay, wind, and frost. Crataegus ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ is low-maintenance and well-suited to temperate climates. It’s both drought and frost hardy once established and ideal for adding colour and charm to cottage-style or formal gardens.

They look excellent as feature trees, in avenue plantings, or as small shade trees in mixed landscapes. With its showy spring flowers and manageable size, the Paul’s Scarlet Hawthorn provides lasting seasonal beauty and wildlife value.
