About Your New Crassula ‘Blue Bird’ – Blue Bird Jade Plant
Crassula ‘Blue Bird’ is a compact evergreen succulent hybrid with rounded, powder blue to grey leaves that pick up pink and mauve tones through the cooler months. It branches close to the base into a dense low mound, and the waxy bloom on the foliage gives the plant a cool, matte finish.
It takes full sun to bright filtered light and needs sharp drainage in sandy, gravelly or purpose built succulent soil. Coastal, warm temperate, Mediterranean and semi arid gardens suit it best. Growth runs at 10 to 25 centimetres a year, and once established it copes with long dry periods and the occasional light frost.
It is used in mass plantings for dry gardens, in rockeries, on roof top terraces and in feature pots where the blue foliage sits well against rendered concrete and dark leaved plants. Larger container sizes make good single specimens beside a doorway. It fills space, holds its colour and asks for almost no water.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Blue Bird Jade Plant
What is Crassula ‘Blue Bird’?
It is a hybrid jade type succulent grown for foliage colour rather than flowers. The rounded, fleshy leaves carry a powdery blue grey coating, and cold weather brings pink and mauve tints to the margins. It stays compact and well branched, forming a dense evergreen mound instead of a leggy shrub.
How big does Blue Bird Jade grow?
It is a compact grower, usually 60 centimetres to 1 metre tall and about the same across, and it keeps a tidy mounded shape without pruning. Plants in large containers reach a similar height more slowly. Advanced sizes are useful where you want an immediate mass of blue foliage in a new bed.
Where does it grow best in Australia?
Coastal and inland gardens across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia suit it, along with most of Victoria. It handles dry summers, sandy soil and salt wind. In cold tableland and alpine districts, grow it in a pot that can be moved under cover for the coldest months.
Is it frost tolerant?
It handles light frost once established, and the blue foliage often colours up more strongly in cold weather. Heavy or repeated frost will burn the leaf tips, and frost combined with wet soil is what actually kills succulents. Sharp drainage and a position with some overhead protection cover most situations.
Does it have invasive roots?
No. The root system is shallow and fibrous, sitting mostly in the top 20 to 30 centimetres of soil, with no capacity to lift paving or block pipes. That makes it safe to plant in narrow beds beside driveways, against building slabs, in courtyards and over shallow services.
Can it grow in pots?
Yes, and the compact habit makes it one of the better succulents for containers. Use a free draining succulent mix, and choose a pot wide enough to show the mounded form. Water thoroughly then let the mix dry. Move pots under cover during long wet spells to keep the roots healthy.
How do I care for Blue Bird Jade?
Water deeply but rarely, and stop almost entirely over winter. Feed once in spring with a low nitrogen succulent fertiliser, because rich feeding produces soft growth and washes out the blue tones. Tip prune to keep the mound dense, and remove any stems that rot at the base after wet weather.
