Camellia sasanqua 'Early Pearly' is an upright evergreen shrub that flowers earlier than most, opening masses of small white semi double blooms with gold stamens from early autumn. Leaves are small, glossy and dark, held densely right down the stems. The species comes from Japan and southern China, not from Australia.
It handles full sun to partial shade, and prefers a well drained, slightly acidic soil with organic matter worked in before planting. Growth is 30 to 60 centimetres a year, to around 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide. Established plants take light to moderate frost and moderate coastal exposure.
The early flowering makes it useful where a garden needs colour before the sasanqua season proper gets going. Plant it as a boundary hedge, a screen between houses, a clipped block in a formal scheme, or a single shrub near a path. It carries foliage to ground level, so hedges stay solid at the base.

How big does 'Early Pearly' grow?
About 2 to 3 metres tall and 1.5 to 2 metres wide if left to grow out. As a clipped hedge it is easily maintained anywhere between 1.2 and 2.5 metres. The upright habit means it does not need much width, which suits narrow beds along a boundary or driveway.
How fast does it grow?
Around 30 to 60 centimetres a year once established, which is at the quicker end for camellias. Plants put on most growth through spring and summer, then slow while flowering. No. Camellia sasanqua originates in Japan and southern China, and 'Early Pearly' is a garden cultivar of that species. It has been grown here long enough to be a staple of Australian gardens, and it is not regarded as a weed risk, but it is an exotic rather than a native plant.
When does it flower?
It is one of the earliest sasanquas, with flowers opening from early autumn and continuing into winter, roughly March through to June. That early start is the main reason it is chosen over other white sasanquas. Flowers fall cleanly as they finish rather than browning on the plant.
