Buxus microphylla var. microphylla is the small leaved box, trained here into stacked saucers, flat clipped discs carried up a single clean stem. Foliage is fine, glossy and deep green, and it stays that way all year. Small cream flowers appear in spring and go largely unnoticed against the geometry of the shape.
Give it full sun to part shade in a fertile soil that drains freely. It suits cool temperate through to warm temperate gardens and takes light to moderate frost once settled. Growth is slow, roughly 10 to 20 centimetres a year, so the tiers stay legible with only two trims across a season.
Saucers are a statement plant, used singly at an entry, in matched pairs flanking a door or gate, or in generous pots in a courtyard. Because the training takes several years in the nursery, buying a shaped specimen is the only practical way to get that structure into a garden at all.

What is a Buxus topiary saucer?
It is a Buxus microphylla var. microphylla grown on a single upright stem with the growth clipped into flat horizontal discs, or saucers, stacked one above another. The shape is built over several years in the nursery by selecting and training shoots, then holding each tier flat and level with careful trimming.
How tall are the topiary saucers?
The 90 litre specimens stand roughly 1.2 to 1.6 metres tall including the tiers, and around 60 to 80 centimetres across the widest saucer. Because they are trained up a leader they stand taller than this variety would reach as a natural shrub, and they are then held at that height by clipping.
Is Japanese Box evergreen?
Yes, it holds glossy dark green foliage all year, which is the whole point of using it for topiary. There is no leaf drop season and no bare period, so the shape reads the same in winter as it does in summer. Small cream flowers appear in spring and are easily missed against the foliage.
Where does it grow best in Australia?
Cool temperate through to warm temperate gardens suit it best, so Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Sydney, Hobart and the tablelands are all comfortable. It is harder work in humid tropical conditions, where fungal leaf problems become more likely. In hot dry inland gardens give it afternoon shade and steady water through summer.
How often does it need clipping?
Two trims a year hold the tiers cleanly, one in early spring once the coldest weather has passed and one in late summer. Growth of only 10 to 20 centimetres a year means the shape drifts slowly. Use sharp shears, cut back to just above the previous cut line, and keep the underside of each saucer flat.
Can a topiary saucer be grown in a pot?
Yes, and it is a common way to use them. Choose a container at least 50 centimetres wide with good drainage and fill it with a premium potting mix. Water when the top of the mix dries out and feed in spring and again in late summer. Refresh the top layer of mix each year to keep growth even.
How do I care for a Buxus topiary saucer?
Keep water up through the first two summers, mulch lightly and clear of the stem, and feed with a slow release fertiliser in early spring. Clip twice a year to hold the tiers. Rub off any shoots that appear on the clear stem as soon as you see them. Treat box psyllid at the first sign of cupped tips.
