    About Aloe hybrida ‘Moon Glow’

Aloe hybrida 'Moon Glow' is a compact evergreen succulent forming dense rosettes of blue-green to silver-green leaves. Slim upright spikes of soft yellow to apricot flowers rise clear of the foliage through winter and spring. The habit stays tidy at around 40 to 50 centimetres tall and about as wide.

It wants full sun to light shade and sharply drained soil, and it will not tolerate waterlogging. Coastal exposure, wind and long dry spells are handled easily, and it copes with light to moderate frost once established. Growth is modest at around 20 to 40 centimetres a year, with the flower spikes lifting higher.

It suits mass planting in median strips and garden beds, low borders along paths, waterwise and coastal gardens, courtyard beds and pots. Flowering through the cooler months, when most beds are quiet, is the main reason landscapers repeat it across commercial planting where the maintenance budget is thin.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Moon Glow Aloe

    What is Moon Glow Aloe?

It is a hybrid landscape aloe bred for compact size and heavy flowering, rather than a wild species. The rosettes are dense and blue-green to silver-green, and the plant clumps slowly from the base. It is grown mainly for the winter and spring flower spikes, which come reliably from a young age.

How big does Moon Glow Aloe grow?

Rosettes reach roughly 40 to 50 centimetres tall and about the same across, with flower spikes lifting to around 60 to 70 centimetres. It grows 20 to 40 centimetres a year and clumps slowly outwards over time. That compact size is what separates it from the large tree aloes.

    When does it flower?

Winter and spring, roughly June through to November, with the heaviest flush in the cooler months. The spikes carry soft yellow to apricot tubular flowers and last several weeks. Nectar feeding birds work the flowers all season. Removing spent spikes at the base often brings on a second, lighter flush.

    Is it frost tolerant?

It handles light to moderate frost once established, which covers most coastal and near coastal Australian gardens. In frost prone inland districts the risk is cold combined with wet soil rather than cold alone. Plant on a raised bed or a slope with sharp drainage and it will come through winter unmarked.

    Can it grow in pots?

Yes, it is well suited to containers thanks to its compact size and shallow root system. Use a cactus and succulent mix, or add coarse sand and gravel to a standard potting mix, and choose a pot with clear drainage holes. Water only when the mix has dried right through, and less again in winter.

    Is it drought tolerant?

Yes. The thick leaves store water and established plants go months without irrigation in temperate and Mediterranean climates. Water weekly through the first summer to settle the roots, then only during extended heat. Overwatering is far more likely to kill it than drought, particularly in heavy soils over winter.

How do I care for Moon Glow Aloe?

Cut spent flower spikes off at the base once they brown, and pull away shrivelled lower leaves by hand. Feed lightly in early spring with a low nitrogen or succulent fertiliser if growth has stalled. Divide crowded clumps every few years. Keep mulch away from the crown to avoid collar rot.
