About Your New Allocasuarina verticillata - Drooping She Oak - Sale
Allocasuarina verticillata is sold as Drooping She Oak, an evergreen native tree with a soft weeping outline and very fine, grey-green jointed branchlets. The bark is dark and furrowed on older trunks. Female trees flower red through winter and set squat woody cones that stay on the branches into the following year.
This is a tough tree. It takes full sun, salt laden wind, drought, poor gravelly ground and light to moderate frost, and puts on 40 to 70 centimetres a year. Nodules on the roots convert atmospheric nitrogen, so it will establish on stripped or degraded soil where other trees struggle.
It is specified for shelterbelts, screening lines, dune stabilisation, habitat corridors and paddock shade. Growers also plant it near a patio for the sound of wind moving through the branchlets. Where a long lived, low input native tree is needed on difficult ground, this is a dependable choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Drooping She Oak
How tall does Drooping She Oak get?
It reaches 5 to 10 metres tall with a canopy spread of roughly 3 to 6 metres. Height depends heavily on soil depth and rainfall. Sheltered inland sites with deeper soil push it towards 10 metres, while exposed coastal and rocky positions usually hold it around 5 to 6 metres with a broader crown.
Is it drought tolerant?
Yes, strongly so. It is native to some of the driest, thinnest country in southern Australia and survives on natural rainfall once established. The fine branchlets have very little surface area to lose water through, and the roots go deep. Regular deep watering through the first two summers sets the tree up for that.
Is it suitable for coastal positions?
Yes. It is one of the standard trees for exposed coastal planting in southern Australia, holding up to salt wind and sandy soil. Growth is shorter and denser in those positions, which suits windbreak work. Avoid low ground where salt water sits, as it will not tolerate prolonged waterlogging.
Does it need sun or shade?
Full sun, without qualification. It is a pioneer species that colonises open ground and needs strong light to build a dense, well shaped crown. In shade the branchlets thin out, the weeping habit is lost and growth slows. Give it an open position clear of overhanging established canopies.
When does it flower?
Winter is the main flowering period. Female trees carry small red flower clusters along the branchlets, easy to miss at a distance but striking in low sun. Male trees produce rusty brown spikes at the tips. The woody cones that follow on female trees are the more obvious feature through the rest of the year.
Can it be used as a windbreak?
Yes, it is one of the better native windbreak trees. Plant in staggered double rows at 3 metres apart within the row for farm shelterbelts, or closer for a denser screen. The fine branchlets filter wind rather than blocking it, which reduces turbulence on the leeward side and gives better shelter overall.
How do I look after a Drooping She Oak?
Water deeply through the first two summers, then only during severe drought. Mulch well and keep it clear of the trunk. Avoid phosphorus rich fertilisers, which sheoaks do not need. Prune only to lift the lower canopy or remove damaged wood, and do that while the tree is still young.
