Aeonium arboreum, the tree aeonium, is an evergreen succulent from the Canary Islands that branches into a small shrub, carrying a flat rosette of fleshy green leaves at the tip of each stem. Cone shaped heads of yellow flowers open in spring. The effect is sculptural rather than floral.
Plant it in full sun to light shade in gritty, free draining soil. It grows through the cooler months and rests over summer, when the leaves curl inward and watering should ease right off. Frost damages the soft foliage, so it belongs in frost free coastal and temperate gardens. Growth is 20 to 40 centimetres a year.
Height reaches about 1 to 1.5 metres with a spread near 1 metre. It earns its place in waterwise beds, rockeries, coastal gardens, courtyards and wide pots, where the rosettes read as pattern against gravel or stone. Upkeep is minimal once planted, and trimmings strike easily as cuttings to fill any gaps.

Aeonium arboreum, or tree aeonium, is an evergreen succulent from the Canary Islands. It branches into a small shrub with a flat rosette of fleshy green leaves at the end of each stem, so the plant reads as a set of green saucers held on bare stalks. Yellow flower cones appear in spring.
It reaches about 1 to 1.5 metres tall and close to 1 metre across, with individual rosettes 15 to 20 centimetres wide. Growth is roughly 20 to 40 centimetres a year. Older plants can get top heavy and lean, which is easily fixed by cutting the stems back and re-rooting the tops as cuttings.
Full sun to light shade. In coastal and temperate gardens give it as much sun as you can, since shaded plants stretch and the rosettes open out loosely. In hot dry inland positions a little afternoon shade prevents scorching during heatwaves. Under established trees it will survive but never look tight.
