About Your New Zoysia tenuifolia ‘No Mow’ – No Mow Zoysia Grass
Zoysia tenuifolia 'No Mow' is a fine leafed, warm season creeping grass grown as a lawn substitute rather than a conventional turf. It spreads by stolons and rhizomes into a soft, dense mat that mounds and undulates as it thickens, giving a cushioned, textured surface instead of a flat clipped finish.
It sits at roughly 5 to 10 centimetres high and keeps spreading sideways. Full sun to part shade, free draining soil and warmth suit it, so coastal Queensland, New South Wales, Perth and the warmer parts of Victoria and South Australia all work. It takes heat, humidity, salt and drought once established, though light frost browns it off until spring.
It is used in courtyards, resort and contemporary gardens, between pavers, on embankments too steep to mow and in low traffic lawn areas. It is not a play or sports surface. What buyers get is a green, walkable groundcover that stays presentable year round with almost no mowing.
Frequently Asked Questions
About No Mow Zoysia
What is No Mow Zoysia?
Zoysia tenuifolia 'No Mow' is a very fine leafed warm season grass used as a low maintenance lawn alternative. It spreads by runners above and below ground to form a thick mat that crowds out most weeds. Left uncut it develops a rolling, cushioned surface, which is the look most people plant it for.
Do you really never have to mow it?
Close to it. Growth is slow and mostly sideways, so many gardens never mow at all and simply let the mounding habit develop. If you prefer a flatter, tidier surface, one or two cuts a year on a high setting is enough. Weekly mowing works against the whole point of the plant.
Does it need sun or shade?
Full sun to partial shade. It is densest and greenest in full sun, and will thin and slow noticeably in heavy shade under dense trees or on the south side of tall buildings. Around four to six hours of direct sun a day gives a reliable result in most gardens.
Is No Mow Zoysia frost tolerant?
Only up to a point. It handles light frost, but the foliage browns off and stays discoloured until temperatures lift in spring, and heavy or repeated frost will set it back badly. Treat it as a warm climate grass. In cold inland or tableland districts, expect a long and dull winter appearance.
Can you walk on No Mow Zoysia?
Light traffic only. It suits paths, courtyards, garden edges and areas walked across occasionally, but it recovers slowly from wear and will not hold up to children running about, dogs wearing lines or vehicles. Where a hard wearing lawn is needed, a couch or buffalo variety is the sensible choice instead.
Is it suitable for coastal gardens?
Yes. It tolerates salt laden wind and sandy soils, and it is widely used in beachside courtyards and resort landscaping along the Queensland and northern New South Wales coast. Free draining coastal sands suit it well, provided it gets water and a little feeding through the first season while the runners knit together.
How do I care for No Mow Zoysia?
Water regularly until the runners join, usually through the first summer, then cut back to occasional deep watering. Feed lightly in spring and again in late summer with a slow release lawn fertiliser. Hand weed while it is filling in. After that it needs little more than an annual tidy and a topdress in low spots.
