About Tilia Cordata
Tilia cordata, commonly known as Small-Leaved Lime or Little-Leaf Linden, is a medium to large deciduous shade tree with a formal, upright pyramidal canopy. It features dark green, heart-shaped leaves that turn a bright golden yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest and reliable shade.
They look excellent when planted as avenue trees, in parks, or along streetscapes, providing a refined and symmetrical form. The fragrant pale-yellow flowers bloom in late spring to early summer, attracting bees and enhancing pollinator-friendly gardens.
Well-suited to a wide range of soils and urban conditions, Tilia cordata tolerates pollution and moderate drought once established. For added landscape impact, it can be underplanted with shade-tolerant perennials or groundcovers to create layered and textured garden beds. Maintenance is low to moderate, with formative pruning recommended in early years to develop a strong structure.

Preffered Soil
Tilia cordata performs best in well-drained loam or sandy loam soils with an acidic to neutral pH. It will tolerate lighter sandy soils if enriched with organic matter to improve moisture retention and fertility. Avoid heavy clay, compacted or waterlogged conditions unless significantly improved, as these soils can stress the roots and reduce growth. Keep the soil evenly moist during establishment, then gradually reduce watering as the tree matures.
