About Your New Syzygium australe ‘Up & Away’ – Up & Away Lilly Pilly
Syzygium australe 'Up & Away' is a narrow, columnar evergreen selected for vertical growth and a tight footprint. Dense glossy green foliage clothes the upright stems from the base, giving a clean screening face. New growth flushes fresh before deepening to green, and fluffy white flowers appear over summer.
It grows quickly for a narrow plant, adding 60 to 90 centimetres a year and reaching around 4 to 6 metres tall by 1.5 to 2 metres wide. Full sun to partial shade suits it, in well drained soil with regular water while establishing. Light to moderate frost is tolerated once it has settled.
This is a screening plant for tight sites, along fences, between houses, beside driveways and around service areas where width is limited. It takes pruning well, so height can be capped without losing density. Where a narrow hedge is needed in a hurry, its speed is the main reason to choose it.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Up & Away Lilly Pilly
What is Up & Away Lilly Pilly?
It is a cultivar of the native brush cherry, Syzygium australe, selected for an upright columnar habit with minimal spread. The foliage is small and glossy and sits densely along the stems, so the plant screens well without needing to be wide. It is evergreen and holds that cover through the whole year.
How big does Up & Away grow?
It reaches roughly 4 to 6 metres in height with a width of only 1.5 to 2 metres, and it can be topped at any height and will stay dense. That narrow profile lets it screen a first floor window from a garden bed barely a metre deep, which is where most people use it.
How fast does it grow?
Growth is 60 to 90 centimetres a year, quick for a columnar plant, so a screen from advanced stock closes over within a season or two. Warm weather, steady water and a spring feed keep it moving. Once it reaches the height you want, regular trimming holds it there and pushes growth into density instead.
How far apart should I plant it for a narrow screen?
For a solid narrow screen, plant 1 to 1.5 metres apart. Where the line needs to close quickly or be kept formal, 80 centimetres apart is better. Used as a single vertical accent, allow 3 to 4 metres. Because the plant is naturally narrow, tight spacing here is normal rather than a compromise.
Does it need sun or shade?
Full sun gives the densest, most even column and is the usual choice for screening. Partial shade is workable, including a fence line that only gets morning sun, though growth will be a little more open. Very shaded positions produce thin, stretched growth and undermine the whole reason for planting it.
Can it be grown in planter boxes?
Yes. The narrow root plate and upright form suit large planter boxes, which is why it turns up in courtyards and on rooftops. Use a box at least 50 centimetres wide and deep, with free draining mix and reliable irrigation, since plants in containers dry out fast. Expect a lower ultimate height than in the ground.
How do I prune and care for it?
Trim the sides and top two or three times through the warmer months to keep the column tight, cutting into the current season's growth rather than old wood. Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch. Feed in spring with a native fertiliser. Inspect new shoots for psyllid and remove any distorted tips.
