Pyrus calleryana x pyrifolia ‘Javelin’ (Javelin Pear) looks excellent when used as a narrow, upright feature tree in tight urban spaces or formal gardens. Its tall, columnar form—reaching 6–8 metres high with just 1–2 metres spread—creates clean vertical lines perfect for fences, driveways, and narrow borders where space is limited.
The tree offers stunning seasonal interest with masses of small white spring flowers, followed by glossy green summer foliage that turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and burgundy in autumn. This dramatic colour display adds strong visual contrast and texture to landscapes.
‘Javelin’ performs well in full sun and tolerates light shade and a variety of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as drainage is good. Its moderate drought tolerance and resilience to urban pollution and compacted soils make it a practical choice for city streetscapes, avenue planting, and structured residential gardens.
For enhanced garden design, it can be underplanted with low-maintenance groundcovers or shade-loving perennials to soften its architectural form and create layered planting schemes.
