    About Mangave ‘Burnt Burgundy’

Mangave 'Burnt Burgundy' is a hybrid between Agave and Manfreda, grown as a compact evergreen succulent rosette. The broad leaves carry a deep burgundy to purple flush over a green base, with fine darker speckling that shifts through the year. The form is tight and symmetrical, and it holds that shape without attention.

The rosette sits at roughly 20 to 40 centimetres high with a slightly wider spread, and builds faster than a true Agave. Full sun deepens the colour, while part shade greens it off. Free draining soil is essential. Light to moderate frost is handled once established, though cold wet soil in winter is the real risk.

Use it in raised gravel beds, rockeries, courtyards and waterwise plantings, or in a shallow bowl where the rosette can be read from above. Repeated along a bed it gives a clean, modern rhythm. Once it is in the ground the watering can largely stop, which suits low input commercial landscapes.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Burnt Burgundy Mangave

    What is Mangave 'Burnt Burgundy'?

Mangave 'Burnt Burgundy' is a hybrid succulent bred from Agave and Manfreda. It forms a compact evergreen rosette of broad leaves washed in burgundy and purple over a green base, with darker speckling. It keeps the toughness of an Agave but grows faster, colours far more strongly and carries much softer leaf tips.

How big does Burnt Burgundy Mangave get?

The rosette settles at roughly 20 to 40 centimetres high with a spread a little wider than its height. It stays compact for years and does not run, so it holds its shape in a bed or a pot. Offsets appear slowly around the base and can be removed or left to build a clump.

    Does it need full sun?

Full sun is where the burgundy colouring is strongest. In part shade the leaves shift towards green and the rosette opens up and loosens. In the hottest inland districts, shelter from harsh afternoon sun in midsummer prevents scorch on new growth. Anywhere with at least five or six hours of direct light will do.

    Can it grow in pots?

Yes, containers suit it well. Use a free draining cactus and succulent mix, a pot with open drainage holes, and something shallow and wide so the rosette can be seen from above. Pots also let you move the plant under cover through a wet winter, which matters more to it than cold does.

    Is it frost tolerant?

It handles light to moderate frost once established, which covers most of southern Australia. Cold combined with wet soil causes the damage, not the cold on its own. In frost prone gardens, plant it on a mound or into gravel, keep the crown clear of mulch and stop irrigating over winter.

    Does Mangave flower?

Mature plants can send up a tall spike of green flowers in summer, though flowering is irregular and often takes several years. The rosette that flowers usually declines afterwards, but by then offsets have formed around the base and carry the planting on. Cut the spent spike out at the base once it dries off.

How do I care for Burnt Burgundy Mangave?

Very little is needed. Water occasionally through the first summer to settle the roots, then only in long dry spells. Avoid heavy fertilising, since soft growth dulls the leaf colour. Pull off shrivelled lower leaves by hand, use a coarse gravel mulch rather than bark, and never let water sit around the base.
