Lilly Pilly - Acmena smithii minor Hot Flush Tear drop 90L Evergreen Trees Direct

About Your New Acmena smithii minor Hot Flush Tear drop - Lilly Pilly

Acmena smithii minor 'Hot Flush' is a compact evergreen form of the Australian native lilly pilly. Its copper red new growth is the drawcard, hardening to glossy dark green as each flush matures. The bush branches heavily from the base and holds a rounded upright shape. Cream flowers open through summer.

Growth runs at roughly 50 to 75 centimetres a year, which is quick for a plant this compact. Give it full sun to part shade and any well drained soil. It suits temperate, subtropical, coastal and milder inland districts, takes light to moderate frost once established and resists the psyllid that troubles other lilly pillies.

At 2 to 3 metres tall and only 1 to 1.5 metres wide, it fits beds that a standard lilly pilly would outgrow. Common jobs are hedges along side fences, screening between neighbouring houses on narrow blocks, driveway plantings and courtyard pots. The narrow habit means less cutting back to keep a path clear.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Hot Flush Lilly Pilly

What is Hot Flush Lilly Pilly?

Hot Flush is a compact form of the Australian native Acmena smithii minor, grown for copper red new growth that hardens to glossy dark green. It branches densely from the base and holds an upright rounded shape, which makes it one of the more reliable hedging lilly pillies. Cream flowers open through summer.

How big does Hot Flush grow?

It reaches 2 to 3 metres tall and 1 to 1.5 metres wide when left to its own devices. The narrow width is the useful part, since it fits garden beds too tight for a standard lilly pilly. Trimming twice a year will hold it anywhere from 1.2 metres upward without the base thinning out.

How fast does it grow?

Roughly 50 to 75 centimetres a year, which is fast for a plant this compact. Most of that arrives in warm weather flushes rather than as steady growth. Given water, drainage and a feed in early spring, a row planted at hedge spacing will usually close up within two growing seasons.

Does it need full sun or shade?

Full sun gives the densest growth and the strongest red on the new foliage. It will grow in part shade and still screen well, though the colour is softer and the plant a little more open. Aim for at least four hours of direct sun a day. Deep shade under established trees is too dark.

How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?

Plant 80 centimetres apart for a tight formal hedge, or 1 to 1.5 metres apart for a dense informal screen. As a single feature shrub, allow 3 to 4 metres so the shape develops fully. In containers, one plant suits a pot 40 to 50 centimetres wide for an entry or balcony.

Is it frost tolerant?

It handles light to moderate frost once established, which covers most coastal and inland temperate gardens. Young plants are more vulnerable, so plant in spring rather than heading into winter, and keep them out of low frost hollows. In colder districts a temporary cover through the first winter is worth the effort.

How do I prune and care for Hot Flush?

Trim after each growth flush, taking the soft new tips rather than cutting into bare wood. Two or three light trims a year build a dense hedge faster than one hard cut. Water deeply through the first two summers, mulch well, and feed with a native fertiliser in early spring.
