About Erythrina indica – Indian Coral Tree
Erythrina indica, commonly known as the Indian Coral Tree, is a striking deciduous tropical tree admired for its vivid red flowers and bold branching structure. It develops a broad, spreading canopy with thick, thorny branches and bright green trifoliate leaves. In late winter through spring, before the new foliage appears, it produces large clusters of brilliant scarlet-red, pea-shaped flowers that attract nectar-feeding birds. Mature trees typically grow 8–12 metres tall with a spread of 6–10 metres, forming a rounded, open crown.
This species is fast growing in warm climates and performs best in full sun and well-drained soil. Erythrina indica is tolerant of coastal conditions, drought once established, and light frost. It is deciduous during winter, allowing light to filter through in cooler months, then flushes with new green foliage in spring. Low-maintenance and highly ornamental, it’s ideal for adding colour and structure to tropical and subtropical landscapes.
They look excellent when used as feature trees, avenue plantings, or in large gardens where their vibrant red flowers can be fully appreciated. They are also well suited to coastal and civic landscapes where durability and seasonal colour are desired.
