Cyathea cooperi, commonly known as the Australian Tree Fern or Lacy Tree Fern, is a fast-growing, elegant fern prized for its tall, slender trunk and lush, arching fronds. The soft, lacy green foliage creates a beautiful, tropical canopy that adds instant texture and movement to shaded gardens. Mature plants can reach 3–6 metres tall with a 3–4 metre spread, forming a stunning vertical accent in rainforest-style or sheltered garden settings.
This evergreen fern thrives in part shade to full shade and moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Cyathea cooperi is ideal for subtropical to temperate climates and appreciates regular watering, especially during dry periods. It’s moderately frost tolerant when mature but benefits from protection when young. Once established, it provides a dramatic focal point that evokes a true rainforest atmosphere.
They look excellent as feature plants in shaded beds, under large canopy trees, or near ponds and water features. The Australian Tree Fern’s graceful form and soft fronds bring a lush, calming presence to tropical, woodland, and shaded landscapes.
