    About Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball

Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball is a clipped topiary form of a well known Japanese sasanqua cultivar. The large semi-double white flowers open flat with a prominent gold centre, carried above small glossy evergreen leaves. Regular shearing keeps the plant as a tight sphere while it continues to flower through autumn and winter.

It takes full sun to part shade and wants slightly acidic, free-draining soil that stays evenly moist. Annual growth of 30 to 50 centimetres gives enough vigour to recover quickly from clipping. Light to moderate frost is not a problem once the roots are down. Avoid dry, reflected heat against western walls.

Balls work in pairs at a gate or entry, spaced along a path, repeated through a formal bed, or grown in glazed pots on a courtyard. Unlike a clipped buxus ball, this one flowers, so it carries a formal shape and a seasonal display at the same time. That is useful in a small garden.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Setsugekka Camellia Ball

What is a Setsugekka camellia ball?

It is Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ grown and clipped into a dense sphere. ‘Setsugekka’ is an old Japanese cultivar known for large white semi-double flowers with gold stamens. The ball form is created by regular shearing from a young age, which thickens the foliage and gives the clean outline that formal planting relies on.

How big does the ball get?

As supplied and maintained, the ball is generally held between 1 and 1.5 metres in diameter, including the short clear stem some are grown on. Left unclipped, ‘Setsugekka’ would build into a shrub of 2 to 3 metres. Two or three clips a year hold it at whatever diameter suits the space.

Does it need sun or shade?

Full sun to partial shade both work, and sasanquas flower more heavily with reasonable light. Four to six hours of sun gives good bud set without scorching. In hot inland gardens, afternoon shade protects the foliage. In heavy shade the ball opens up and loses the density that makes the shape read.

    When does it flower?

Autumn into winter, generally March through to July. Because the plant is clipped, timing is the trick: shear straight after flowering ends and again in early summer, then leave it alone from late summer so the buds forming on that growth are not cut off before they open.

Can it grow in a pot?

Yes, and pots are one of its best uses. Use a container at least 50 to 60 centimetres wide with free drainage and a mix for acid loving plants. Potted camellias dry out fast in summer, so check the soil often and consider drip irrigation. Repot or root prune every three to four years.

    Is it frost tolerant?

It tolerates light to moderate frost once established, which covers most temperate and cool temperate Australian gardens. Frost damage generally shows on soft new growth rather than mature leaves. Keep the root zone mulched, water before a cold snap, and delay hard clipping until the risk of late frost has passed.

How do I look after a camellia topiary ball?

Clip two or three times a year to keep the outline crisp, always finishing the main shear soon after flowering. Feed with a camellia fertiliser in spring and again in late summer, mulch to hold moisture, and water deeply rather than often. Check inside the canopy for scale, which likes the still air of dense growth.

    Planting Information

How To Plant Your Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball – Setsugekka Camellia Topiary Ball

Site: Choose a well-drained position in full sun to part shade with room for the canopy to develop, or a large container in a bright spot.

Soil preparation: Enrich the planting area with quality compost and aged manure, or use a premium potting mix in containers.

Hole: Dig twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth in garden beds. For pots, choose a container at least 50 centimetres wide and deep.

Planting: Position level with the surrounding soil or potting mix, backfill gently, firm in, then water deeply to settle the roots.

Recommended Planting Spacing For Your Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball – Setsugekka Camellia Topiary Ball

Feature tree: 3 to 4 metres apart to allow the full canopy and form to develop.

Pot or container: A 40 to 50 centimetre wide pot suits a single specimen for courtyards, entries and balconies.

Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball – Setsugekka Camellia Topiary Ball is expected to grow 30cm to 50cm per year under suitable conditions.

Long Term Care For Your Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball – Setsugekka Camellia Topiary Ball

Watering: Water deeply twice weekly through the first 12 months. Once established, keep the root zone consistently moist with weekly deep watering and additional water during hot dry spells.

Mulching: Apply a 3 to 5 centimetre layer of organic mulch over the root zone in the garden, or a thin layer of decorative pebbles in pots, keeping it clear of the trunk.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Light tip prune in late winter to maintain shape if used as hedging or screening. For a clear trunk feature, remove lower branches as the tree grows.

Fertilising: Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring and again in autumn for steady growth and consistent foliage colour.

Pest and disease: Hardy against most pests and diseases. Occasional inspection for scale or sooty mould in warm humid conditions is all that's needed.

Planting Your Camellia sasanqua ‘Setsugekka’ Ball – Setsugekka Camellia Topiary Ball in Different Soil

Camellia sasanqua performs best in rich, well-drained loam with a slightly acidic pH and consistent moisture. Adaptable to a wide range of soils when drainage and organic matter are managed well.

Sandy soil: Free-draining but enrich heavily with compost and mulch deeply to hold moisture.

Clay soil: Improve drainage with gypsum and organic compost, and mound slightly to lift the root zone.

Loam: The preferred soil for steady root development and consistent flowering.

pH: Slightly acidic preferred. Mulch with composted leaf litter or pine bark to maintain levels naturally.
