About Your New Bougainvillea ‘White Cascade’ – White Cascade Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea 'White Cascade' is a vigorous evergreen climbing shrub grown for the sheets of pure white bracts it carries above mid green foliage. The colour comes from papery bracts rather than the small cream flowers held inside them. Growth is spreading and trailing, so it drapes over a support instead of holding a rigid shape.
Full sun is essential for heavy bract production, and drainage matters far more than soil richness. It is frost sensitive, so keep it to frost free or sheltered positions, and it performs across warm temperate, subtropical and tropical districts as well as hot inland gardens. Expect 1 to 2 metres of growth a year once established.
Most buyers train it over pergolas, arbours, arches and boundary walls, or let it spill from a raised bed or retaining wall. It also holds well in a large pot set against a warm courtyard wall. The speed of cover is the practical draw, since a bare structure softens within two or three seasons.
Frequently Asked Questions
About White Cascade Bougainvillea
What is Bougainvillea 'White Cascade'?
It is a hybrid bougainvillea selected for pure white bracts and a cascading, climbing habit. The plant is evergreen in frost free climates and belongs to the family Nyctaginaceae. What reads as the flower is actually three papery bracts surrounding a small cream tubular bloom, and those bracts hold their colour on the plant for weeks.
How big does White Cascade Bougainvillea grow?
Trained onto a fence, pergola or wall it will cover 3 to 5 metres of height and spread 2 to 3 metres wide. Left to trail from a raised bed or a large pot it behaves more like a mounding shrub of 1.5 to 2 metres. Pruning controls the final size easily, since it responds well to hard cutting back.
When does it flower?
The main bract display comes in spring, roughly September to November, with a second flush in autumn through March and April. In warm frost free gardens flowering can continue on and off for much of the year. Plants flower harder when they are kept a little dry and are not pushed with high nitrogen fertiliser.
Does it need full sun?
Yes. Bougainvillea needs at least six hours of direct sun a day to set bracts in any quantity, and a hot north or west facing aspect is ideal. In shade or heavy overhead cover the plant still grows but produces mostly foliage with sparse colour. Reflected heat from paving or masonry improves the display.
Is it frost tolerant?
No. This is a frost sensitive plant that can lose foliage and soft growth in a frost event, and young plants can be killed outright. Keep it to frost free positions, or plant against a north facing wall, under eaves or beneath tree cover where cold air drains away. In cold districts grow it in a pot that can be moved.
Can it grow in pots?
It does well in containers, and the root restriction often improves flowering. Use a pot of at least 40 to 50 centimetres across with a free draining mix, and give it a trellis or an obelisk to climb. Container plants dry out quickly in summer, so water regularly through the warmer months and prune after each flush.
How do I care for White Cascade Bougainvillea?
Water regularly through the first summer, then cut back to occasional deep soakings. Prune after each flowering flush to shorten the long whippy canes and to keep growth tied to its support. Feed in early spring with a low nitrogen or flowering plant fertiliser. Wear gloves when working with it, as the stems carry sharp thorns.
