Bougainvillea 'Inca Gold' is an evergreen climber grown for dense clusters of golden-orange bracts that age towards apricot and soft copper. Broad mid-green leaves cover vigorous spreading canes armed with short thorns. The true flowers are small cream tubes tucked inside each set of three bracts, which is where the colour actually sits.
It needs an open position in full sun and soil that drains freely, so sandy and gravelly ground is fine. Warm coastal and inland districts from Perth to Brisbane suit it, and it is frost sensitive, so cold hollows are out. Once established it copes with heat and long dry spells. Canes add one to two metres a year.
Run it along a boundary fence, over a carport or across a hot north-facing wall that needs softening. It also suits large planters on rooftops and terraces where soil volume is limited. Because it flowers hardest when kept a little dry and lean, it is a sensible choice for gardens with restricted watering.

'Inca Gold' is a bougainvillea cultivar grown for golden-orange bracts that soften towards apricot and copper as they age, giving a plant with several tones showing at once. It is an evergreen, thorny, spreading climber with broad mid-green leaves and the same vigorous habit as the other large-growing bougainvilleas.
Are the colourful parts flowers or bracts?
They are bracts, which are modified leaves. Each cluster of three bracts surrounds three small cream tubular flowers, and it is the bracts that carry the colour and hold it for weeks. That is why a bougainvillea stays bright far longer than a plant relying on true petals, and why the display looks papery up close.
How big does Inca Gold grow?
Given support it climbs 5 to 8 metres with a spread of 3 to 5 metres. Kept clipped it can be held at 2 to 3 metres as a large shrub or a wall-trained plant. In a large container it stays smaller again, generally 1.5 to 2 metres, because root volume limits how far the canes extend.
Where does it grow best in Australia?
Warm, bright, frost-free places: Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane, coastal New South Wales, Perth and drier inland towns with mild winters. It also does well in Mediterranean climates such as Adelaide. Cool tableland gardens and frost hollows are not suitable unless the plant is potted and sheltered over winter.
Is it drought tolerant?
Yes, strongly so once established. After the first year it will carry through long dry spells without watering, and a degree of dryness actually improves bract colour. Plant it in full sun with sharp drainage and disturb the roots as little as possible, since bougainvilleas resent root damage. Water regularly for the first summer, then cut back sharply.
