About Your New Bougainvillea ‘Purple Cascade’ – Purple Cascade Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea 'Purple Cascade' is an evergreen climber with vivid purple bracts and a naturally trailing habit. Rather than pushing straight up, the canes arch over and hang, which is where the name comes from. Foliage is broad and mid-green, and the bract colour deepens in strong direct light through the warmer months.
Give it full sun and soil that drains freely, since it will not tolerate waterlogging or heavy clay. Frost sensitive by nature, it belongs in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate zones, or on a protected wall in Mediterranean climates. Once established it is genuinely drought tolerant. Canes extend one to two metres a year, so allow room.
Plant it on top of a retaining wall, along an elevated garden bed or in a raised planter where the growth can spill down a face. It also drapes well from a pergola beam or a balcony edge. Where a blank vertical surface needs covering from above, this is a direct way to do it.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Purple Cascade Bougainvillea
What is Bougainvillea 'Purple Cascade'?
'Purple Cascade' is an evergreen bougainvillea grown for vivid purple bracts and a trailing, arching habit. Rather than climbing upright, the canes bend over and hang, which is where the name comes from. Foliage is broad and mid-green, and the bract colour intensifies in strong direct light.
How big does Purple Cascade grow?
Trained upwards it will climb 4 to 6 metres, and it spreads or trails 3 to 5 metres wide. Allowed to cascade from a wall or planter it can hang two to three metres down a face. Pruning keeps it to whatever scale you need, and it responds well to being cut back hard.
How fast does it grow?
Quickly, at one to two metres of new cane a year in warm conditions with full sun. A plant on top of a retaining wall can drape a good stretch of that face within two summers. Growth pauses over winter and picks up as temperatures rise, so most extension happens between spring and autumn.
When does it flower?
The heaviest displays come in spring, September to November, and again in autumn, March to May. In tropical and subtropical gardens colour can persist through much of the year. Bract production is driven by bright light and a slightly dry root zone, so keep watering restrained once the plant is established.
Can it be grown over a retaining wall or in a raised planter?
That is exactly where it does its best work. Planted at the top of a wall or in an elevated bed, the trailing canes fall over the edge and cover the face in colour. Make sure the planter drains freely, as the one condition it will not tolerate is a root zone that stays wet.
Is it drought tolerant?
Yes. Once established it is very drought tolerant and will hold on through long dry periods without irrigation. A slightly dry root zone actually improves bract colour and density. Water deeply during the first year to get the roots down, then reduce to occasional deep soakings during extended heat.
How do I prune and care for Purple Cascade?
Cut back after each flowering flush, shortening spent canes to a framework and removing anything tangled or dead. Wear gloves, as the canes are thorny. Feed lightly in early spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser and avoid rich mulches against the stem. Keep water up only during establishment, then let the plant run lean.
