About Your New Bougainvillea ‘Lolita’ – Compact Flowering Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea 'Lolita' is a compact evergreen form that stays low and bushy instead of climbing. Bright pink-purple bracts sit closely over dense broad-leaved growth, and the plant flowers heavily for its size. Stems are shorter and stiffer than the climbing cultivars, so it holds a rounded shape without a frame or trellis.
Full sun brings the strongest bract colour, and free-draining soil or a good quality potting mix is essential. It is frost sensitive and best in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical gardens, or in a sheltered courtyard further south. Growth is modest, around 50 centimetres to a metre a year, and it is dry tolerant once settled.
Its size makes it useful in pots by a front door, along balcony edges, in courtyard beds and as a low informal border in a hot garden. It also works massed on a dry embankment. For small spaces it delivers bougainvillea colour without the pruning load of a full climbing variety.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Lolita Bougainvillea
What is Bougainvillea 'Lolita'?
'Lolita' is a compact, dense bougainvillea that grows as a low bushy shrub rather than a climber. It carries bright pink-purple bracts over broad evergreen leaves and flowers heavily for its size. The shorter, stiffer stems mean it holds a rounded shape on its own without needing a trellis or wires.
How big does Lolita Bougainvillea grow?
It stays small, generally 1 to 1.5 metres tall and about the same across in the ground. In a pot it usually sits closer to 60 centimetres to a metre. Light trimming keeps it tighter still. This size difference is what makes it workable in courtyards where the climbing cultivars are simply too much plant.
Can it grow in pots?
Pots are one of its main uses. A container of 40 centimetres or wider with free-draining mix suits it well, placed where it gets full sun for most of the day. Let the mix dry between waterings. Because it is frost sensitive, a pot also lets you shift it to shelter through the coldest weeks.
Is it evergreen or deciduous?
Evergreen in warm climates, holding its leaves year round. In cooler or markedly dry conditions it may drop some foliage over winter and look sparse for a few weeks before reshooting in spring. That is a normal response to cold or dryness rather than a sign of ill health, and the plant recovers on its own.
When does it flower?
Bract colour peaks in spring, from about September to November, and again in autumn through March to May. In warm frost-free gardens it often carries some colour for much of the year. Bright light and a lean, slightly dry root zone bring the heaviest flushes, so avoid rich feeding and constant watering.
Is it frost tolerant?
No, it is frost sensitive like all bougainvilleas. Light frost burns the soft growth and repeated frosts will set the plant back badly. Choose a frost-free position, a warm courtyard or a sunny north-facing wall, or grow it in a container that can be moved under eaves or into a glasshouse for winter.
How do I care for Lolita Bougainvillea?
Full sun, free drainage and restrained watering are the essentials. Trim lightly after each flowering flush to keep the shape dense; it does not need the hard cutting back that the vigorous climbers require. Feed once in spring with a low-nitrogen fertiliser. Check that pots do not stay wet, as soggy mix is the main risk.
