About Your New Betula nigra ‘Summer Cascade’ – Summer Cascade River Birch
Betula nigra 'Summer Cascade' is the only genuinely weeping River Birch in cultivation, holding long cascading branches that fall almost to the ground from a compact frame. It combines that graceful form with the toughness of the species, which is what separates it from the ornamental birches that struggle in Australian conditions.
'Summer Cascade' grows to 4 to 8 metres tall and wide at 40 to 80 centimetres per year, considerably smaller than a standard River Birch. Fresh green foliage turns buttery yellow in autumn, and as the trunk matures it develops exfoliating bark peeling in cinnamon, cream and salmon layers that carries the tree right through winter.
This is a frost hardy tree, surviving heavy and frequent frost without damage, and unlike Silver Birch it tolerates wet ground, heat and humidity while resisting bronze birch borer. It grows in full sun and suits waterside plantings, low-lying corners and feature positions where other birches fail.
