Aloe plicatilis, now also classified as Kumara plicatilis and known as Fan Aloe, is an evergreen succulent shrub with a branching habit and smooth grey stems. Its strap-like blue-green leaves are arranged in flat opposing fans at each branch tip, a form found in no other aloe.
It needs full sun and genuinely free-draining soil, and prefers its moisture in the cooler months rather than a wet summer. Growth is slow, around 15 to 30 centimetres a year, and scarlet tubular flowers appear in winter. Light frost is tolerated once established, though prolonged cold and wet soil together are not.
It is used as a sculptural specimen in gravel gardens, entry beds, courtyards and large containers, reading as a small tree in scale over time. Its slow, deliberate growth means it holds a designed composition for years. For a feature plant that will not outgrow its position, few succulents match it.
About Fan Aloe
Fan Aloe is a slow growing evergreen succulent shrub from the winter rainfall region of South Africa. Botanists have moved it out of Aloe into the genus Kumara, so you will see it listed as both Aloe plicatilis and Kumara plicatilis. The name refers to the flat fans of leaves held at each branch tip.
In cultivation it usually reaches around 1.5 to 2.5 metres high and 1.5 to 2 metres wide, though that takes many years given how slowly it grows. Older plants develop a thick, smooth trunk and a rounded branching crown, which is why it is often described as a small tree in miniature.
Slowly, roughly 15 to 30 centimetres a year in favourable conditions and less in cool or shaded positions. That pace is part of its appeal in designed spaces, because the plant holds its proportions for a long time. Planting an advanced specimen is the practical way to get scale into a project without waiting a decade.
Full sun produces the tightest branching, the best leaf colour and the strongest flowering. Light shade is tolerated, but the branches lengthen and the fan arrangement becomes less distinct. Avoid shaded, still positions with poor air movement, since these encourage rot at the base of the plant in wet weather.
It handles light frost once established, but it is not a plant for cold districts with heavy or repeated frost, particularly where winters are also wet.
