Aloe arborescens, the Candelabra Aloe, is a large branching succulent shrub with rosettes of toothed blue-green leaves held on multiple stems. Through winter it throws up cone shaped spikes of orange-red flowers, often several at once, standing well clear of the foliage. Mature plants reach around 2 to 3 metres.
Full sun and free draining soil produce the best form and the heaviest flowering. It thrives in coastal, Mediterranean and warm temperate gardens, takes salt wind, and tolerates light to moderate frost once established. Growth is quick for a succulent at 30 to 60 centimetres a year, and it asks for very little.
It is used as a large feature specimen, a low informal barrier hedge, a bank stabiliser on dry slopes and in broad mass planting on commercial sites. Honeyeaters work the flowers all winter. Where a big, fast, waterwise shrub is needed on poor ground, few plants fill the space as quickly.
About Candelabra Aloe
It reaches about 2 to 3 metres tall with a similar spread, branching from the base into a broad multi-stemmed shrub. Plants in full sun on lean soil stay more compact, while those in richer soil with regular water grow taller and looser. Container plants stay smaller, usually under 1.5 metres.
Fast for a succulent, around 30 to 60 centimetres a year once established. New plants put on height quickly in their first few seasons, then broaden as side branches develop. Warmth and free draining soil drive the growth rate more than fertiliser does, and overwatering slows it by causing root problems.
Winter into early spring, roughly June to September, which is the main reason it is planted. Each stem produces a tapering spike of orange-red tubular flowers, and a large plant can carry dozens at once. The display lasts four to six weeks and draws honeyeaters and other nectar feeding birds.
It takes light to moderate frost once established and is grown successfully across southern Australia. Frost damage shows as translucent patches on the leaf tips, which the plant grows out of in spring. Heavy repeated frosts combined with wet soil are the real risk, so plant on a slope or raised bed in cold districts.
