Agave salmiana, the Giant Agave, is the largest agave in general cultivation in Australia. Broad grey-green leaves arch out and up from a heavy central rosette, each one channelled down the middle and finished with a long dark spine. A mature plant reads as architecture more than as a garden plant.
It grows fast for the genus, 30 to 60 centimetres a year, in full sun and any soil that drains. Heat, wind, poor ground and long dry spells are handled without irrigation once it has settled, and established plants take light to moderate frost. Suckers appear around the base and can be removed.
Scale is the point, so it belongs on rural entries, in broad median beds, on batter slopes and in large commercial plantings where a small plant would simply disappear. Allow four metres of clear ground and keep it well back from footpaths, because the leaf tips are genuinely sharp.
About Giant Agave
Giant Agave is Agave salmiana, the largest agave in general cultivation in this country. Broad grey-green leaves curve upward and outward from a heavy rosette, each channelled along its length and tipped with a long dark spine. It is evergreen, suckers from the base to form colonies, and is used where scale is wanted.
A mature rosette reaches roughly 1.5 to 2 metres high and 3 to 4 metres wide, and the clump spreads wider again as offsets fill in around it. This is not a plant for a small garden. Allow at least four metres of clear ground and keep it away from footpaths, driveways and fence lines.
Fast for an agave, putting on 30 to 60 centimetres a year in warm conditions with occasional water. A plant from a 40 centimetre pot reads as a substantial feature within three or four years. Growth slows markedly in winter and in cold districts, and stops altogether through a severe dry season.
Exceptionally. Once established it needs no irrigation across most of mainland Australia and performs on rainfall alone through extended dry periods. It is regularly specified for unirrigated rural entries and roadside beds. Water it monthly through the first summer to get the roots away, and after that only in severe drought.
Yes, but only once, usually after fifteen to thirty years. The plant sends up a branched spike that can exceed eight metres, carrying yellow flowers through summer. The flowering rosette then dies, leaving the ring of suckers around it to carry the clump on. Cut the spent rosette out at ground level when it collapses.
For a run of individual specimens, four metres apart lets each rosette develop fully without the leaves crossing. For a mass planting on a slope or median where the plants are meant to merge, three metres is enough. Suckers will fill the gaps over time, so err on the generous side.
It needs almost nothing. Remove dry lower leaves at the base with a long handled tool, and dig out unwanted suckers while they are small, which is far easier than waiting. Wear gloves and eye protection when working near it, since the terminal spines are hard and sharp. No feeding or spraying is required.
