Agave desmettiana, the smooth agave, is a soft leaved succulent forming a wide, vase shaped rosette of arching blue-green leaves. The foliage is smoother and more supple than that of most agaves, with only fine teeth along the margins and a short firm spine at each leaf tip.
It wants full sun to part shade and soil that drains freely, sand included. Warm temperate, subtropical and coastal gardens suit it best, and it handles salt laden wind. Growth is fast for an agave at roughly 30 to 60 centimetres a year. It is very drought tolerant, but only lightly frost hardy.
The quick fill and generous width make it useful where a bed needs covering in a hurry. Use it in coastal plantings, poolside beds, dry gardens and large containers, either as a single specimen or repeated in a row. It reaches usable size faster than almost any other agave on the market.
About Smooth Agave
It is a Mexican succulent grown across Australia for its arching blue-green foliage and clean rosette shape. The common name smooth agave refers to the leaf surface and the fine, low set marginal teeth, which are far less aggressive than those of a species such as americana. It is grown for form rather than flowers.
Quickly by agave standards, at around 30 to 60 centimetres a year in warm conditions with reasonable moisture. A plant from a 40 centimetre pot generally makes a convincing feature within two seasons. Growth slows markedly in cool weather and in heavy shade, then picks up again with summer warmth.
About 0.8 to 1 metre high and 1 to 1.5 metres across at maturity, with the outer leaves arching outward and down. Allow for that full width when siting it, because the leaf tips reach further than most people expect. Plants kept in containers hold to roughly two thirds of that size.
Yes. It tolerates salt laden wind and sandy soil, which makes it a reliable choice for foreshore and near coastal planting on both the eastern and western seaboards. Give it an open position with good drainage. In exposed frontline sites the leaves may mark a little, but the plant itself keeps going.

No. The root system is shallow and fibrous and poses no threat to pipes, paving or footings. The only spreading it does is above ground, through offsets that appear around the base of the parent plant. Those are easy to lift and remove if you want to keep the planting contained.
Water it through the first summer to settle the roots, then leave it largely to the weather. Remove tired lower leaves at the base and cut off any flower spike if you would rather keep the plant tidy. Keep heavy mulch away from the crown, and never let it sit in wet soil.

Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Balls' is Star Jasmine grown and clipped into a dense evergreen sphere. The small glossy leaves sit tight on a woody framework, holding a clean rounded outline year round. White pinwheel flowers open in spring and carry a strong sweet scent right across a courtyard.
