    About Agave attenuata ‘Silver Trim’

Agave attenuata 'Silver Trim' is a variegated selection of the foxtail agave, forming a broad symmetrical rosette of soft blue-green leaves edged in creamy silver-white. The leaves are spineless, with no sharp point at the tip, and the rosette slowly lifts onto a short thickened trunk as the plant ages.

Grow it in full sun to part shade in free-draining soil. It suits warm temperate, subtropical, coastal and Mediterranean gardens across Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Growth is steady at roughly 20 to 40 centimetres a year. It is very drought tolerant once established, but only lightly frost hardy.

The spineless foliage makes it one of the few agaves that can sit safely beside paths, pools and seating. Use it in courtyards, raised planters, coastal gardens and waterwise landscapes, singly as a feature or massed in drifts. It gives year round structure and colour with almost no ongoing input.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    About Silver Trim Foxtail Agave

What is Agave attenuata 'Silver Trim'?

It is a variegated form of the foxtail agave, a succulent grown for its foliage rather than its flowers. Soft blue-green leaves carry creamy silver margins and build a wide, symmetrical rosette on a short trunk. The leaves have no marginal teeth and no rigid tip, which sets it apart from most other agaves.

How big does Silver Trim Foxtail Agave grow?

Expect around 0.8 to 1 metre in height and 1 to 1.2 metres across once the rosette is fully developed. Older plants lift onto a short thickened trunk, which adds a little height over time. Grown in a container it stays smaller, usually holding to about two thirds of those figures.

    Is it frost tolerant?

It handles light frost once established, but it is one of the more cold sensitive agaves. Temperatures near or below minus two degrees will mark the leaves, and repeated heavy frost can rot the crown. In colder inland districts, give it a warm sheltered position or grow it in a pot that can be moved.

Is it safe to plant beside paths and pools?

Yes. Unlike most agaves, this one has no marginal teeth and no rigid spine at the leaf tip, so brushing past it does no harm. That makes it a practical choice for courtyards, pool surrounds and narrow beds along walkways. The sap can still irritate skin, so wear gloves when removing old leaves.

Can it be grown in pots?

It grows well in containers and is often used that way. Choose a wide pot with generous drainage holes, fill it with a free-draining cactus and succulent mix, and water only once the mix has dried out. Potted plants stay more compact and can be shifted under cover during a cold or very wet spell.

How far apart should I plant it in a mass planting?

Space plants 1 to 1.2 metres apart for a continuous mass, which lets each rosette reach full width without crowding. For a looser, more open arrangement, stretch that to 1.5 metres. As a single feature, allow at least 1.2 metres of clear ground around the plant so the form reads properly.

How do I care for Silver Trim Foxtail Agave?

Very little is needed. Water deeply but infrequently through the first summer, then only during long dry spells. Pull or cut away the lower leaves as they age to keep the rosette tidy. Feed lightly in spring if growth slows. The main risk is waterlogging, so keep drainage sharp and avoid overwatering.
