About Afrocarpus falcatus – Podocarpus / Outeniqua Yellowwood
Afrocarpus falcatus, also known as Podocarpus or the Outeniqua Yellowwood, is a tall evergreen conifer valued for its upright form and fine-textured foliage. Its leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and dark green, forming a dense, layered canopy. Over time, it develops a straight trunk with smooth grey bark and a high, conical crown, reaching 15–25 metres tall and 6–10 metres wide in maturity. Inconspicuous flowers are followed by small, fleshy fruits that attract birds.
This species is moderate growing and highly adaptable, tolerating a range of soils provided they are well drained. It is frost hardy once established, drought tolerant, and performs well in both coastal and inland sites. Afrocarpus falcatus is evergreen, low maintenance, and long-lived, making it a reliable choice for large gardens, parks, and civic landscapes. It responds well to pruning and can be clipped when young to create hedging or screens.
They look excellent when used as stately feature trees, in avenue plantings, or as background screening for large landscapes. Their dense evergreen canopy also makes them valuable for habitat plantings and windbreaks in open spaces.
