Urbis - Trough - Grey Evergreen Trees Direct

About Your New Urbis - Trough - Grey

The Urbis Trough in grey is a long rectangular planter from the Urbis range of landscape planters. The lines are square and unadorned, and the standard finish is a light cement grey. Three lengths are made, from 120cm through to a two metre trough, all at 50cm high.

The body is a medium weight composite, lighter than concrete or ceramic but more substantial than fibreglass, so it holds its shape in a long run without bowing. Weights are approximately 60kg for the L120 x W55 x H50cm, 70kg for the L150 x W55 x H50cm and 85kg for the L200 x W45 x H50cm.

Troughs earn their place where a line of planting is needed: along a boundary, between an outdoor dining area and a walkway, across a rooftop terrace or through a commercial foyer. Planted with a clipped hedge, bamboo, lomandra or a run of grasses, they screen without the permanence of a wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Urbis Trough Grey

What sizes and weights does the Urbis Trough come in?

Three sizes are made: L120 x W55 x H50cm at approximately 60kg, L150 x W55 x H50cm at approximately 70kg, and L200 x W45 x H50cm at approximately 85kg. Note that the two metre trough is slightly narrower at 45cm wide, which is worth checking against your planting plan.

What is it made from?

It is a medium weight composite. That places it between the usual options: lighter than concrete or ceramic, so a two metre trough can still be positioned by a small crew, but more substantial than fibreglass, so the long sides stay true and the planter feels solid in place.

What finishes are available?

The natural finish is a light cement grey. Pigmented Charcoal and White Cement can also be supplied. In addition, fine stone paint finishes can be applied in the warehouse, which are completely matt and made for outdoor exposure. Finishes may vary slightly from the trough shown in the photograph.

Can it be used outdoors permanently?

Yes. These are landscape planters built for outdoor use, and the stone paint finishes are matt and formulated to hold up outside. Set the trough level so water does not pool at one end, keep the drainage clear, and use feet on paving so moisture can escape from underneath.

Can custom lengths be made?

They can. Troughs are frequently specified to fit a particular wall, balustrade or podium edge, and custom planters can be sized to suit a project brief. Have the finished run, the available width and the depth for root volume worked out before the sizing conversation begins.

What should I plant in a trough?

Anything that works in a line. Clipped buxus, westringia or murraya for a low hedge, slender bamboo or a screening plant for privacy, lomandra and dwarf grasses for texture, or herbs beside a kitchen door. Fifty centimetres of depth gives enough root volume for most hedging plants.

How do I clean and maintain it?

Use mild soapy water and a soft bristle brush such as a nail brush to remove marks, then rinse. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasives, which will damage a matt finish. Check the drainage after heavy rain, since a long trough can hold water at the low end if the base is not level.
