About Your New Premium Potting Mix
Premium Potting Mix is a general purpose growing medium made to the Australian Standard for premium quality potting mixes, bagged in 30L. Along with the base blend it carries slow release fertiliser, a wetting agent and a natural growth stimulant, so it comes ready to plant into without anything else needing to be added.
It drains freely, while the wetting agent keeps water moving evenly through the mix instead of running down the side of the pot and out the bottom. The slow release fertiliser feeds steadily over months rather than in one flush, which holds plants together through hot spells and other rough conditions.
Use it for indoor plants, potted colour, herbs, vegetables, citrus in tubs and ornamental shrubs in containers, indoors or out. Repot in spring, summer or early autumn, avoiding very hot weather. Repot once roots come through the drainage holes or spiral at the base of the root ball. For natives, use the Native Potting Mix.
Frequently Asked Questions
About Premium Potting Mix
What is Premium Potting Mix made from?
It is a premium grade blend made to the Australian Standard for potting mixes, with slow release fertiliser, a wetting agent and a natural growth stimulant added. That standard covers physical properties such as drainage, air filled porosity and nutrient levels, so the mix performs consistently rather than varying from one bag to the next.
What plants is it suitable for?
Indoor plants, potted colour, herbs, vegetables, citrus and ornamentals in tubs, and general container growing outdoors. It suits exotics and most non native plants that want steady feeding through the season. Phosphorus sensitive Australian natives are the exception and should go into the Native Potting Mix rather than this one.
Does it contain fertiliser already?
Yes. Slow release fertiliser is built into the mix, along with a wetting agent and a natural growth stimulant, so nothing needs adding at potting time. The fertiliser feeds over months rather than all at once. Once that initial charge is used up, start a normal liquid or granular feeding routine to keep plants going.
Is it safe for natives?
No, not the phosphorus sensitive ones. The slow release fertiliser in this mix carries phosphorus at levels that Proteaceae such as Banksia, Grevillea, Hakea and Protea cannot tolerate, and the damage usually shows as blackened leaf tips, dieback and sudden collapse. Use the Native Potting Mix for those plants instead.
Is it certified organic?
No. This is not a certified organic product, because the slow release fertiliser and wetting agent in it are manufactured inputs. It is a sound mix for general container growing. If you want an organic route for edibles, use a certified organic compost and planting mix in the bed and feed with a certified organic fertiliser.
How much do I need?
A 30L bag fills about two 300 millimetre pots, or three to four 250 millimetre pots, less the volume of the root ball going in. Measure the container rather than guessing from the size of the plant, and allow a little spare, because fresh mix settles a centimetre or two after the first deep watering.
Does it need to be watered in?
Yes, thoroughly, until water runs out of the drainage holes. That first watering settles the mix around the roots, activates the wetting agent and drives out air pockets. Keep it evenly moist over the first fortnight while roots move into the new mix. After that, water by feel and by season rather than on a fixed schedule.
