Evergreen Trees Direct is Industry Recognised Award Winning Online Advanced & Established Tree Nursery.

Description

Syzygium Australe is a fast-growing, dense native tree with lovely glossy leaves that start bronze then turn dark green.

It makes a very good hedge plant because it grows foliage right down to its roots, which means that it’s perfect for small to medium sized topiary projects.

The creamy white powder puffs turn into edible, bright red, crispy, fleshy fruits that make a delicious jam or a refreshing snack when they're eaten raw. They also attract lots of birds.

Once these plants are established, they tend to be frost hardy.

The Lilly Pilly may be the most cultivated hedge in Australia (along with Murraya panicualta), but it isn't the only one.

Soil

It prefers rich, well drained soils, but will thrive in poorer soils too. If you have sandy soil, then just add some compost, peat moss, or both.

It likes full sun but can tolerate some shade. Basically, the less shade it gets, the slower it grows, and the thinner its foliage cover. However, even under half-day sun, it still makes a good hedge.

Maintenance

Keep well mulched, feed with blood and bone, and use a slow-release fertilizer.

Keep trimming so you don't get any flower buds left behind.

Diseases

A hardier native that is can be susceptible to psyllids, so if you're having trouble with them, use Confidor.

New varieties of plants have been developed that resist psyllid infestations.

Other species: This is the largest genera of lilly pilly found in Australia though there is dwarf varieties. Others include Corynantheus francisii, Corynantheus luehmannii, Corynantheus moorei, Corynantheus paniculatus.

Syzigium australis Southern form is very popular because it grows well but can be prone to pests if weak or not healthy.

Another popular variety is Syzygium Resilience.

Comments: The name Syzygium comes from Greek and refers to the paired leaves of Calyptranthes suzygium, a plant from the Caribbean for which the name was first used.

It used to be known as Eugenia until it was reclassified by botanists as another species.

Really great range and very helpful team. I recently bought a large crepe myrtle and I was really pleased with both the size and the quality of the tree. By far the best value feature trees I've seen.
