About Randia fitzalanii – Native Gardenia

Randia fitzalanii, commonly known as Native Gardenia, is a compact evergreen tree valued for its glossy foliage and highly fragrant flowers. The leaves are dark green, broad, and dense, forming a rounded crown that provides year-round structure. In spring and summer, it produces creamy-white, strongly perfumed flowers similar to true gardenias, followed by round, edible orange fruits. Mature plants typically grow 3–6 metres tall with a spread of 2–3 metres, making them ideal for both small gardens and larger landscapes.

This species has a moderate growth rate and is native to northern Australia. Randia fitzalanii performs best in full sun to part shade and prefers fertile, well-drained soils with regular moisture. It is tolerant of light frosts and adapts well to coastal and subtropical climates. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance, with occasional pruning after flowering helping to maintain a dense, rounded form. The flowers attract pollinators and the fruits are enjoyed by birds, adding ecological value.

Directions For Use

Water plant well at least several hours prior to planting.
Dig a hole at least twice the width of the pot and 7cm deeper than the pot.
Mix Grow Better Enriched Planting Mix with the soil that has been dug out of the hole, adding about 1/3 planting mix.
Spread a 7cm layer of improved soil in the hole and remove plant from the pot. Tease roots gently if the root ball is very firm and place plant in the planting hole. Check that pot soil is level with the surrounding soil surface level, not higher or lower.
Fill in the hole with improved soil mixture, firm down soil and water well adding Grow Better Plant Starter to final watering.
