About Your New Quercus canariensis – Algerian Oak / Mirbeck’s Oak

Quercus canariensis, commonly known as the Algerian Oak or Mirbeck’s Oak, is a stately semi-evergreen tree admired for its broad, spreading canopy and handsome glossy foliage. The large, dark green leaves have softly serrated edges and turn golden to russet tones before dropping briefly in winter. Its smooth grey bark matures to a rugged, textured trunk with age, adding character and structure to the landscape. Mature trees typically reach 15–25 metres tall with a spread of 10–15 metres, providing excellent shade and year-round interest.

This Mediterranean species thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, showing excellent tolerance to heat, drought, and wind once established. Quercus canariensis is semi-evergreen in warm climates and partially deciduous in cooler regions, making it adaptable across a range of environments. Hardy and long-lived, it’s suitable for parks, large gardens, and streetscapes where strength, beauty, and resilience are required.

Directions For Use

Water plant well at least several hours prior to planting.
Dig a hole at least twice the width of the pot and 7cm deeper than the pot.
Mix Grow Better Enriched Planting Mix with the soil that has been dug out of the hole, adding about 1/3 planting mix.
Spread a 7cm layer of improved soil in the hole and remove plant from the pot. Tease roots gently if the root ball is very firm and place plant in the planting hole. Check that pot soil is level with the surrounding soil surface level, not higher or lower.
Fill in the hole with improved soil mixture, firm down soil and water well adding Grow Better Plant Starter to final watering.
