PLANT PROFILE

Morus nigra, commonly known as the Black Mulberry, is a long-lived, deciduous fruit tree renowned for its delicious, dark purple-black berries and broad, spreading canopy. The heart-shaped leaves are bright green and deeply veined, turning soft yellow in autumn. In late spring to early summer, small, pale-green flowers appear, followed by sweet, richly flavoured fruit that ripens through summer. Mature trees typically reach 8–12 metres tall and wide, forming a beautiful shade canopy as well as producing abundant fruit.

This hardy and easy-to-grow species thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. Morus nigra is drought tolerant once established and performs well in a variety of climates, including warm temperate and Mediterranean regions. It’s self-fertile, requiring no pollinator, and rewards with generous crops of berries ideal for eating fresh, drying, or making preserves. The tree’s broad canopy provides excellent summer shade, making it both practical and ornamental.

They look excellent as feature trees in large gardens or orchards, or planted for shade in courtyards and rural landscapes. The Black Mulberry’s combination of rich fruit, hardy nature, and graceful form makes it a classic favourite in productive and ornamental gardens alike.
